A tourist has been caught on dash cam footage driving down the wrong side of the road on Victoria’s surf coast.

Local resident Shanan Greenhough captured the vision on the The Esplanade at Torquay on Sunday.

“I got the absolute shock of my life,” Shanan told Neil Mitchell.

“It hadn’t veered across, it was just driving along the wrong side of the road.

“It was probably going the speed limit, just heading towards my daughter and I.”

“Police said that licence plate was a hire car from Tullamarine Airport,” Shanan added.

“There was three people in the car of Asian appearance.”

3AW Mornings was then inundated with calls and emails from residents along the Great Ocean Road with their own similar experiences.

Andrew sent the below picture of a roadworks sign at Separation Creek, with the text in Asian symbols.

Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton said the problem inflates enormously during the summer months.

“It’s always an issue on holiday roads, up towards the snow and down at Phillip Island as well,” Mr Ashton said.

“The driving can be very erratic and Highway Patrol are always reporting in on such cases.”

He also said Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer had made a video to be shown at hire car companies for international tourists to watch when they pick up a car from the airport.

But after ringing around, 3AW Mornings producer Sam Locock told Neil she couldn’t find a single company who said they used the video.
