A Melbourne man has calmly defused a potentially dangerous situation when he caught a thief in the act in a St Kilda car park.

Josh Denney admits he foolishly left his car unlocked in the underground carpark off Fitzroy Street when he returned around 10.30am to find a mystery man rifling through his glove-box and console.

So he started filming.

‘I couldn’t believe what was happening, so I didn’t think anybody else would,’ he told Tony Jones on 3AW.

Josh asked the man what was in pockets, before he handed over Josh’s iPod and other items.

‘But I’ve been copping a lot of flak about the crayons he had – they certainly weren’t mine!’ Josh said with a laugh.
