Wave of humidity: Victorians warned ‘the worst is yet to come’

Victorians are sweating through an extraordinarily humid period, and there’s not much relief in sight.

Jonathan How, from the Bureau of Meteorology, says current conditions are “very much Queensland tropical conditions”.

“Generally in summer in Melbourne we’re looking at dew point temperatures about five or 10, so that’s pretty dry air. But now it’s sitting around 18 to 22, so that’s pretty much what you see in Darwin most of the year,” he told Neil Mitchell.

Humidity is expected to build further tomorrow and peak on Thursday, before dipping slightly on Friday evening and Saturday morning, then rising again on Monday.

“The worst is yet to come, unfortunately, we are going to see some very humid days,” Mr How said.

“Tomorrow night — that’s when you want your air-conditioning on.”
