Australia’s most iconic animal could easily become extinct if we aren’t careful, warn kangaroo advocates.

A report in The Australian revealed millions of kangaroos had died in NSW over the past year as a result of a mystery illness.

Nikki Sutterby, president of the Australian Society for Kangaroos, told 3AW there were regular unexplained “die offs” after significant weather events.

She said kangaroos did not adapt well to climate change.

Ms Sutterby said Victoria was the only state in Australia that did not have population data, a move she labelled “reckless” by the state government.

“We need to be very careful,” she said.
