A cold front is approaching Melbourne, bringing damaging winds and rain.

A severe weather warning is in place for elevated areas and west of Melbourne.

Melbourne itself can expect afternoon rain and possibly an evening thunderstorm.

But the weather bureau’s Richard Carlyon says parts of the state most in need of rain look set to miss out.

“Places like the Mallee and perhaps East Gippsland, which are hoping for more rain, are not likely to see too much in terms of rainfall,” he said.

“(There will be) around 15-25mm for the eastern ranges, which will be a combination of both rain and snow. But not a huge amount of rain.

“It is, again, mainly wind.”
