Unions will ramp up protests at Webb Dock this morning, with operations expected to be shut down for several hours.

The dispute relates to a Maritime Union of Australia member who can’t work after being denied the necessary security clearance.

He was denied clearance because he has a past criminal conviction.

Ross Stevenson: And that’s caused the docks to be shut down? That sounds absurd.

Peter Anderson, from the Victorian Transport Association, says cargo including perishables and medical supplies have also been caught up in the dispute.

One ship had to turn around and go back to Adelaide.

“The owners of that freight now have to truck or rail that freight back to Melbourne from Adelaide,” he said.
