One of Melbourne’s most well-known taxi drivers says the government’s plan to clamp down on Uber surcharging will fix little.

‘Lou the cabbie’ told 3AW Drive he found it amusing the government was finally angered by surges, given taxi drivers had complained for a while about the matter.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan expressed her disappointment after hearing about incredible Uber surges when Melbourne’s train system was brought to a standstill last week.

The government will look at cracking down on the matter, but not everybody is pleased.

“Pleased is not really the right word, mainly because it’s a knee-jerk reaction from the minister,” Lou told Nick McCallum.

“I’m more amused, because we told her this was going to happen and she didn’t listen.”

Lou said the only solution to ending surcharges was to get rid of Uber.
