A western suburbs council has come under fire for spending almost $19,000 ratepayer dollars on a trip to Barcelona.

Tom Elliott questioned Wyndham Council mayor Henry Barlow over council’s decision to send four people to Spain to showcase an invention.

“We kept it to a minimum,” Cr Barlow said.

“We could have sent a couple of people but this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to see one of the world’s smart cities.”

Cr Barlow said the council had spent almost $30,000 inventing a product which uses virtual reality technology to showcase proposed council developments.
