A drug expert is warning if a safe injecting room is built in the CBD it will have to be more comprehensive than the current site in Richmond.

After years of delay, former police chief commissioner Ken Lay will finally begin community consultation over plans for a second injecting room in Melbourne today.

But Sam Biondi from the Alcohol and Drug Association says for it to work in Flinders Street it will need to be a more significant operation.

“If you do that you need a lot more activity happening on the ground and you need to have a pharmacotherapy system that works, you need outreach workers on the ground, you need local government doing their bit to keep things tidy, you need housing plans for people who are homeless, you need to put a whole range of things and conditions in place,” he told Neil Mitchell.
