A professor of global Islamic politics says it’s difficult to disagree with comments made by ASIO head Mike Burgess regarding an elevated risk of violence and terrorism plots in Australia over the Israel-Hamas war.

Dr Greg Barton at the Alfred Deakin institute for citizenship and globalisation at Deakin University says he can see the potential for violence.

“There’s a lot of hate-speech going around, and a lot of ugly content, and you can see how that increases the potential for somebody to decide to be a hero, and that somebody could be from across the political spectrum,” he told Neil Mitchell.

He also says there was nothing wrong with the decision  to light up buildings in support of Israel after the events of October 7.

“It was absolutely right to stand with Israel … just as it was also right to allow people to express concern about what’s happening in the Gaza Strip … we need to encourage mutual respect,” he say.
