Deputy Premier Ben Carroll says the government is aware community expectations are not being met, after a teen thug accused of a machete attack outside Luna Park was freed on bail.

The 19-year-old is also suspected of two other machete attacks this month, with police opposing his release, claiming he ‘laughed and giggled’ when he was served with a personal safety intervention order.

When asked whether releasing the teen was the right decision, Mr Carroll told Tom Elliott young offenders do need to be given a chance to turn their lives around.

Press PLAY to what he had to say on the 19-year-old getting bail (and the future of bail laws in the state)

“I never want to be one of those politicians that attacks the courts or criticises the courts for simply interpreting the law in ways that might be inconvenient to me or to anybody else.”

The deputy Premier also was questioned on protest permits, the Suburban Rail Loop and Airport Rail Link, and redeeming mistakes from the VCE exam debacle.
