Firefighters union boss Peter Marshall says fire services are struggling to keep up with the “very different” fire risk posed by electric cars, bikes, scooters and charging stations.

He says it’s an “unintended consequence” of Australia’s switch to renewables.

Speaking on 3AW Drive, Mr Marshall said the type of fire caused by an exploding lithium battery needed vastly different training.

“Quite frankly, Tom, the technology changes are occurring at a pace more rapid than what the emergency services can keep up with,” he said.
