Whether it be the ski fields, local hairdresser or pub, businesses all over Victoria are struggling to fill positions.

It’s seeing some unable to open at all, despite customer demand for their services.

Nigel Collin, change and innovation expert, said it wasn’t just the lack of foreign workers, be they backpackers or students, having an impact.

“Some of this is really industry based,” he explained on 3AW Drive.

“You mentioned Mt Buller … obviously, tourism and events were hit really hard in the pandemic and, as a result, they lost a lot of workers because people had to survive and there was no work and so they left.”

He said it had created a “vacuum” in worker shortages in those sectors.
