Melbournians have reported seeing snow fall in various parts of the city this week.

Yesterday, footage taken from a high-rise near the Queen Victoria Market appeared to show snow falling.

Today, Neil Mitchell received calls and emails from listeners in Brighton and Hampton who insisted snow was falling.

“It’s not something we’ve seen in this part of Melbourne before!,” Hampton local Nigel said.

The Bureau of Meterology’s Phoebe de Wilt says the so-called “snow” is probably sleet, which is a combination of ice and rain.

“When you get those turbulent winds in the CBD, it can cause hail — if it’s light enough — to act like snow,” she told the Herald Sun.
