Sussan Ley has been locked in as Peter Dutton’s successor as federal opposition leader after narrowly defeating Angus Taylor in Tuesday’s leadership ballot.

Ms Ley, who served as deputy leader under Mr Dutton, becomes the first female to hold the Liberal leadership position after winning the vote 29 to 25.

Heidi Murphy said the closeness of the ballot pointed to uncertain times ahead for the Liberal Party.

“I don’t imagine there’d be any peaceful or unified times ahead when the vote is that close,” she said on 3AW Afternoons.

“I was quite surprised there was quite a tight battle over the role of federal opposition leader.”
