What likely caused the global Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp outages
Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp were down worldwide for about six hours this morning.
New York Times technology correspondent, Mike Isaac, says company insiders told him a server problem was responsible for the massive outage.
“Usually that means a piece of code was changed and then sort of rolled out widely,” he told Ross and Russel.
“They basically need to reset the servers manually.”
Mr Isaac says the outage caused absolute chaos within the company.
“It’s a real comedy of errors because all of their internal communications tools can’t work,” he said.

Earlier in the outage, tech expert and editor of EFTM, Trevor Long, said it was a “fundamental failing of either Facebook or their systems that are meant to protect attacks or outages”.
Mr Long said the outage could be caused by an engineering mistake, or a cyber attack.
“It’s been at least three hours now, my guess is it could be another three or more,” he told Ross and Russel
