The 2023 Australian of the Year says she’s “just really grateful to have a platform” to talk about body image.

Body image activist Taryn Brumfitt says her focus this year will be listening to what Australians have to say about the subject.

“At times it’s got lost in the #loveyourbody conversation and I’m just glad now we can turn this into a more serious conversation,” she told Neil Mitchell.

“I just think we need to be really careful of all the things we say in front of our kids, whether it’s ‘Oh you’ve lost weight, congratulations’ or talking about diet. We need to end all that conversation because the kids are listening and they’re really struggling — 70 per cent of Australian school children consider body image to be their number one concern.”
