What’s causing a ‘bit of disruption’ to supermarket meat supplies

Tom Elliott

Shoppers have noticed some gaps in the meat section at supermarkets in recent weeks, and a carbon dioxide shortage is to blame.

Victorian Farmers Federation president Emma Germano told Neil Mitchell there’s “a little bit of disruption” to the supply of carbon dioxide which is crucial to processing for some meat products including ready-made meals and mince.

It “shouldn’t be looking like massive shortages on the shelves” at the moment, but it “could become a bigger issue”.

But Ms Germano says there’s no need to panic.

“Let’s not do the panic buying thing and kind of strip the shelves,” she said.
