When it is and isn’t OK to tell a lie
Neil Mitchell took interest in a recent study that found one-in-four people lied about their finances, posing a question about just how common lying was in society.
Apparently, the average Australian tells 10 of them a day!
Ethicist Dr Leslie Cannold said it was OK to lie to avoid hurting a person, or to protect them.
“Hard cases make bad law – it’s the same with ethics,” she said.
“In most instances, it’s not a good idea to lie, but that doesn’t mean in every instance it’s going to be wrong.”
