There’s long-awaited good news for Melbourne’s public transport system, with contactless payments expected to be implemented across the network early next year.

Tap-and-go payments have been widely used on public transport overseas and interstate, but commuters in Melbourne are still being forced to use an outdated myki card.

With the Metro Tunnel expected to open later this year, independent transport expert Marion Terrill said it was unfortunate contactless payments won’t be available for its launch.

“I think it’s pretty unfortunate to have poor phasing (with contactless payments) because of the costs associated with it,” she told Ross and Russ.
