Australian cricketing great Adam Gilchrist is backing incumbent Sam Konstas to open the batting to start the Ashes summer.

The first Test between Australia and England begins on November 21, with several Sheffield Shield matches in the lead-up set to decide who opens at Optus Stadium.

When asked on 3AW Breakfast who he thinks it should be, Gilchrist said backing the 20-year-old Konstas made sense.

“I would like to see (the selectors) go and stay with Konstas,” he told Ross and Russ.

“I think he stays as opener.”
