A conflicted cafe owner says if a Matildas win at the FIFA Women’s World Cup means a public holiday, he “hopes they lose”.

Owner of Rathdowne & Reeves Cafe in Carlton, Damian Byrdy, took to Facebook with the statement. He told Neil Mitchell he simply can’t afford a public holiday.

“I don’t want them to lose but it’s going to cost us money to either open or close on a public holiday,” he said.
