The COVID-19 pandemic has sped-up a progressive shift away from Australia’s two major political parties, according to a former Labor party operative who now runs a bipartisan polling firm.

A fresh poll, conducted by RedBridge, surveyed 2400 voters in eight key seats.

Almost 40 per cent of voters said they wouldn’t be backing a major party at the next election.

RedBridge director Kos Samaras said it wasn’t as surprising as it may seem.

“If you look at the election results of the last 20 years we’ve seen a gradual progression towards this point and I think the pandemic has accelerated what was already in place before 2019,” he said on 3AW Mornings.
