Assistant Minister for Citizenship, Customs and Multicultural Affairs Julian Hill has called on the left to rally around Australia Day.

He’s told Tom Elliott he’s worried about the lack of social cohesion he’s witnessed over the last few years.

“We must not, as Australians left, or the sensible bits of the right. We must not concede or cede our national symbols, our national day, our national flag, our institutions as propaganda for extremists,” he said.

He also says Australians have a right to query immigration.

“One thing that really worries me is the conflation with issues of race and culture that we’re seeing. One nation and their fellow travellers exploit community fears about migration,” he added.
