A leading economist believes a slowdown in spending will prevent the Reserve Bank from raising interest rates too high.

It comes after the latest retail figures showed a 3.9 per cent drop in spending in December.

Shane Oliver, AMP’s chief economist, said as supply improves and demand slows down inflation will ease.
