Australia is struggling to attract international visitors, with arrivals still down drastically on pre-pandemic levels.
Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows short-term international arrivals were at just 56 per cent of 2019 levels in January.
But director of the Griffith Institute of Tourism, Dr Sarah Gardiner, doesn’t think there’s a reputational issue at play.

“We’re a long haul destination from a lot of major markets so it’s a big trip, maybe even a once in a lifetime trip so I think it is going to take a little while for these visitors to come back,” she told Ross and Russel.
