Why Australians need to get better at inspecting houses

Australia, we need to talk: You’re lousy home inspectors.

And it results in many people buying a dud.

New research has shown property buyers are spending less than one hour inspecting a home before making one of the biggest financial decisions of their life.

Phil Dwyer, National President of the Builders Collective of Australia, told Ross and John such scant attention to detail was asking for trouble.

“People seem to spend more time on checking out a car than a house — one’s a million (dollars), one’s 50 grand,” he said.

Research shows homeowners are spending less than an hour in houses before parting with their hard-earned – Burnso: “I figured mine had been standing for 100 years, it’s not going to fall over tomorrow”.

Mr Dwyer said it was just as important to carefully look over new homes, as older dwellings.

“These days we don’t build a house that stays there 100 years,” he said.

“We’re lucky if we build a house that is there for 10 years because of the monetary pressures and such put on builders these days.”
