Why Berlin hosting 2036 Olympics would be a ‘very hard sell’

An Olympics expert believes Berlin’s push to host the 2036 Games would be a “very hard sell”.

If the city does land up winning hosting rights, the event would be staged exactly 100 years since the Nazis infamously hosted the Olympics in 1936.

While Berlin is intent to move on from a dark period in their history, Michael Payne – the former Director of Marketing at the International Olympics Committee (IOC) – says it would be extremely difficult for the city to host the 2036 event as a result of the context in which it would take place.

“Personally, I think it would be a very hard sell,” Payne told Shane McInnes on The Olympics Today podcast.

“Here is a movement that’s designed for peace, that is designed to bring the world together. You can’t rewrite history. Berlin happened. But I’m not sure you want the symbolism of being reminded every single second of the day that this is the centenary of the Nazi Olympics.”
