A video has gone viral of a large black “panther” spotted near Ballarat, but researchers have been quick to doubt the legitimacy of the video.

Research at Big Cats Victoria, Simon Townsend, says the cat in the video doesn’t look like a panther.

“There’s no reason to really think it’s a black leopard at all,” he told Tom Elliott.
