The drummer from Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs has given Neil Mitchell a call to explain why one of the most popular bands of all time was booed off stage at Sunbury in 1974.

Yep, you read that correctly!

Queen played (well, tried to) at Melbourne’s attempted answer to Woodstock in late January, 1974.

The infamous tale was brought to Neil’s attention by a caller on Thursday.

It prompted another call shortly after from a man named Gil.

Turns out it was Gil Matthews – the drummer of The Aztecs!

“They were hardly known in Australia at that stage,” he said.

“I remember Freddie Mercury said – ‘you’ll regret this! We’ll be back!’.

He was probably right!
