The 3AW Mornings host highlighted his personal experience with the devastating ‘Black Saturday’ fires, saying “Everything was about as bad as it could possibly get, and we had the Bushfire Royal Commission post Black Saturday because we knew that we had to do things differently”.
“We couldn’t ever face a day again, where almost 200 people would lose their lives, well, it seems we’ve forgotten.”
The Howitt Society has raised concerns, stating that the recommendation to burn off five per cent of public land per year has not been met.

Secretary of The Howitt Society, Garry Squires, highlighted ideology as a possible reason for the failure to meet the recommendation.
“There are people who are against burning, and the government tend to listen to the noisy people rather than look at the science,” Squires said on 3AW Mornings.
