One of Australia’s most prominent epidemiologists admits he’s “somewhat surprised” Melbourne has lagged behind Sydney in the COVID-19 vaccination race, given it’s been Australia’s most COVID-troubled city.

NSW has cracked 70 per cent double dosed, meaning Sydney will finally open up on Monday.

Victoria currently sits at 55 per cent fully vaccinated.

Vaccine supply has continually been listed as the major reason for Victoria lagging behind.

But Professor Peter Collignon AM, Infectious Diseases expert at the Australian National University, said that was only one part of the puzzle.

“Particularly for younger people,” he said.

“But it is somewhat surprising.

“Melbourne, I would have thought, would be No.1 in Australia because of what you’ve gone through.”
