Melbourne’s motorists have “short memories” and have been caught off-guard by traffic finally returning to normal post-lockdown, says the Department of Transport.

Tony Jones, filling in for Neil Mitchell, and a swathe of callers said they’d noticed traffic around Melbourne had been particularly frustrating of late.

Chris Miller, from the department, said the data showed the roads had simply returned to what they were like before the pandemic hit.

“(On Tuesday) we were at the exactly the same traffic volume as we were at this time in 2019,” he said.
