Why Palestinian flags are currently being flown at Federation Square

Red Hot Tip: It’s been confirmed a number of Palestinian flags are being flown at Federation Square today with a planned vigil to be held tonight.

President of the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network, Nasser Mashni, says they booked to fly the flag over a year ago, prior to escalation between Israel and Hamas.

“Every October, November, we have a day for our community, a celebration of everything Palestine, it’s a cultural festival,” he told Neil Mitchell.

He also discussed Palestinian criticism of the Israeli flag being flown saying he objects to the idea which one group’s suffering was elevated over another group.

“There was an opportunity for two communities to come together as Australians and mourn suffering together,” he said.
