RUMOUR CONFIRMED

It’s been revealed why Wednesday night’s much-hyped fireworks display at the MCG was ditched at the last minute.

A half-time fireworks display scheduled for the AFL season opener was called off at 6pm after concerns were raised over the risk of fire.

The Age reports Fire Rescue Victoria raised concerns about the potential fire risk because of the flammable cladding that covers part of the stadium’s Northern Stand.

The Melbourne Cricket Club was told the fireworks could go ahead if fire trucks were stationed around the stadium, but it rejected that option.

Fireworks planned for tonight’s St Kilda v Collingwood game at Marvel Stadium have also been called off due to cladding.
