Why the planned migration intake could be detrimental

Businesses and unions have reportedly agreed on a migration intake of 220,000 people per year in Australia, with a politician voicing his concerns on this number.

Victorian Upper House MP with Sustainable Australia, Clifford Hayes, says the migration intake could be detrimental to infrastructure and the environment.

“We’ve been relying on high population growth for far too long,” he told Neil Mitchell.

“Let’s not bump it up anymore, I’d say let’s try and improve our economy and our employment without bringing in more labour.”

The Jobs and Skills Summit has begun today, but the issue of worker shortages and migration won’t be discussed until tomorrow.

Neil Mitchell fears the summit won’t be as productive as expected.

“It’s got that awful feeling of a waffle fest, I mean they’ll discuss important things but will they actually do anything,” he said.
