Increasing global demand for beef is driving the price up in Australia, with farmers looking to “rebuild” herds post-drought also limiting the cattle being used for meat.

Jason Strong, Managing Director of Meat and Livestock Australia, told 3AW there was no doubt beef had become more expensive.

“It’s because we are retaining cattle and building the herd, that’s what is creating the supply issue,” he explained.
