Why the time of day you exercise matters
Exercise is beneficial whenever you do it, but there are added benefits to doing at the optimal time of day.
A US study has found women burn more fat when they exercise in the morning, while for men the afternoon is best in terms of their metabolism.
Professor of health and human physiological sciences at Skidmore College in New York, Dr Paul Arciero, says there are benefits to exercise at both times of day for both men and women.
For women, evening exercise is linked to muscle gain.
“With women, they have less muscle mass in their upper bodies so that evening exercise was a huge, huge win in the day for them, in terms of getting them stronger,” Dr Arciero told Ross and Russel.
“For the men, they respond equally in the morning and the evening … but excercising in the evening was better for their heart health as well as their metabolism.”
