Maths and science teachers would be paid extra under a radical reform to fill a shortage in Victorian schools.

While the overall teacher workforce is growing, schools continually have a problem finding qualified maths and science teachers.

“Around 40 per cent of time a teacher in a maths class isn’t actually qualified in the subject,” Glenn Fahey, Research Fellow in Education Policy at the Centre for Independent Studies, told 3AW Breakfast.

He said it had been a problem for the “better part” of 20 to 30 years.
