Why there are fears Victorians will have to endure unwanted flight detours through Sydney
Australia’s international borders are set to reopen next month.
But the CEO of Melbourne Airport is concerned Victorians may be stuck with unwanted flight detours through Sydney when international services resume.
Melbourne Airport CEO Lyell Strambi says he’s “nervous”.
“It’s very clear to us that at the moment NSW is ahead because they’re further advanced than us in the vax race and also it’s fairly clear the restrictions the airlines are going to face when they fly to the likes of Sydney,” he told Ross and Russel.
“We have to remember that 70 per cent of our international flights to Australia are provided by foreign carriers.
“Airlines are looking to restart services to Australia, which is great … but they need some certainty.”
