Why there is ‘absolutely no reason’ to still have the luxury car tax

The CEO of the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce says there is “absolutely no reason” to still have the luxury car tax in Australia.
The controversial tax could be abolished as part of the Albanese government’s attempts to negotiate favourable trade conditions with Europe.
VACC CEO Peter Jones spoke to Tom Elliott on 3AW about the tax and why it should be abolished.

Mr Jones said when getting rid of the tax, it has to be a “transition process” in order to make it fair to both the customers and the industry.
“The VACC is advocating to remove it, and we have been for a long time,” he said on 3AW Mornings.
The tax was introduced in 2001 in order to protect the Australian manufacturing industry, which ceased in 2017.
