Why there is ‘no chance at all’ the AFL will consider betting changes

The AFL’s most prominent reformed gambling addict says it’s obvious the league needs to wind back some of the “stupid” betting on the sport.

But he’s adamant there is absolutely no chance it’ll happen.

David Schwarz joined Neil Mitchell on Tuesday to discuss the AFL’s latest scandal, which involves allegations of suspicious betting activity linked to this year’s Brownlow Medal count.

Four men were arrested on Monday, with an AFL umpire reportedly one of the four people taken into custody.

Police expect to charge three of the men.

Neil Mitchell asked Schwarz whether it was time the AFL cut back on some of the exotic bets allowed to be placed on the sport, such as match-by-match Brownlow votes.

“Of course we’ve got to wind it back,” the former Melbourne star said.

“We are betting on things that are just stupid.”

But he said there was “no chance at all” the AFL would consider cutting back.

“And I’ll tell you why – there is too much money involved,” Schwarz said.

“There is too much money for the players and the players’ association won’t have a bar of it because they want more of the pie.

“The AFL want more of the pie and they will believe, and I think rightfully so, that they can better control it being in bed with them, rather than on the outside.”
