Why there’s now ‘no real tipping’ happening in Australia
The pandemic has killed the cash tip.
With very few people now using cash, tip jars are empty, but customers are being prompted to tip more than ever through electronic payment systems and QR ordering systems.
President of the Cafe Owners & Barista Association of Australia, David Parnham, said there’s been a notable decline in tipping recently.
“From talking to a lot of the Melbourne cafe owners over probably the last six months, because of the electronic transactions and the smart pay you can do with your credit card, there’s no real tipping that’s occurring in a lot of these busy cafes now,” he told 3AW Breakfast.
Mr Parnham said fewer international tourists are also contributing to the fall in tips.
“Tipping also was a lot of international people coming to Melbourne,” he said.
“A lot of these foreign people would obviously leave these tips because that’s what they thought they had to do.”
