Middle-aged adults who eat healthy are more likely to have a larger brain, according to research.

Dr Helen MacPherson, from the Institute of Physical Activity and Nutrition at Deakin University, said the risks of developing dementia began in your 40s.

She said those who regularly ate fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as nuts, were better off than those who ate junk.

Dr MacPherson said processed foods and items with added sugar should be avoided.

“Those are the type of foods we really want to cut out,” she said.
