Tom Elliott says he’s worried Melbourne’s crime is heading down the path of South Africa.

The Mornings host says the crime in Melbourne involves a level of violence he didn’t see when he was younger.

“I just don’t recall when I was young that people who stole cars also tried to stab you to death with machetes, and knives, and things like that,” he said.

A criminal psychologist has blamed a range of factors for why crime has grown increasingly more violent.

Tim Watson-Munro says social media, strong adverse peer group dynamics, and determination are partly responsible.

“I’m not an alarmist … I agree with your comments, the stats speak for themselves,” he said.

“We are headed that way,” he added.
