Why Tom Elliott was surprised to see Qantas ‘buckle’ under Chinese pressure
Tom Elliott says he was surprised to see Qantas “buckle” to pressure from China regarding Taiwan, given its “moral stance” on other issues.
Australia’s national carrier was one of 40 airlines told to stop referring to Taiwan as an independent country.
“Qantas tries to present itself as a highly moral company that backs certain issues because, in its view, they’re fundamentally right,” Tom Elliott said.
“Of course the most recent example was same-sex marriage, where Qantas came out firmly in favour of same-sex marriage and encouraged staff to support same-sex marriage.
“So I was surprised it buckled and caved in to this pressure.
“I think it is a moral issue.
“Taiwan is a democracy that we should support – China is a communist state.”
