A prominent epidemiologist says Victoria may need to “dab the brakes” and tighten some restrictions next month to safeguard ahead of Christmas.

Victoria recorded 1126 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday and another five deaths.

Professor Tony Blakely told Neil Mitchell authorities should continue to monitor hot spot areas and possibly enforce stricter density limits and target testing if there is a surge of cases later this month and early December.

“We don’t want to go into Christmas with case numbers at 2500, 3000, a day because Christmas will be a super spreader event and it would become very unpleasant in January,” he said.
