Wind gusts have hit nearly 100km/h in parts of Melbourne this morning.

A severe weather warning remains in place for much of the state.

The strongest gust so far in Melbourne is 98km/h at the Melbourne Airport.

Elsewhere, there have been gusts up to 105km/h at Mt William.

SES Duty Officer Brad Dalgeish says northern parts of the state will be the hardest hit by conditions.

The worst of the gusts will come by mid-morning, but it will remain windy for the rest of the day across Melbourne.

In Essendon, the front of the a building collapsed in the wind at Buckley Street (pictured above).
