Victorians have been warned to expect wild winds tonight and on Thursday morning.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning.

A cold front near the Victoria-South Australia border will move eastwards through central districts tonight and eastern Victoria early on Thursday.

Strong to gale force northerly winds are expected ahead of the front and will then shift westerly and moderate following the change.

Damaging winds are expected up to 120 km/h in some areas.

Locations which may be impacted include Ararat, Kyneton, Ballarat, Daylesford, Mt Buller, Mt Hotham and Falls Creek.

Melbourne is also expected to experience strong winds.
