Police say they were only pursuing a vehicle for about a kilometre before the offending vehicle went onto the wrong side of the road and smashed into an innocent motorist in Preston.

The pursuit began on Bell Street at about 11.20pm on Monday.

The allegedly unlicensed and possibly drug-affected driver attempted to flee on foot after the crash.

The 31-year-old is still under police guard in hospital and yet to be interviewed.

The 41-year-old woman behind the wheel of the other car suffered non-life threatening injuries including a punctured lung.

Assistant Commissioner for road policing Doug Fryer has told 3AW’s Neil Mitchell the officers involved were following protocol.

‘These incidents seem to be happening far too often,’ Fryer tells 3AW Mornings.

‘We’ll review the incident; we review every incident we have.’

Assistant Commissioner Fryer confirmed to Neil Mitchell there will be no further reviews into the pursuit policy at this stage.
